Forest Hills Gardens

Forest Hill

Originally a group of large farms, Forest Hills was developed in the early 1900s as a bedroom community for Manhattan. Two notable subdivisions known as Forest Hills Gardens and Van Court were created. Forest Hills Gardens is approximately 140 acres and consists mainly of large single-family houses designed by such noted architects as Grosvenor Atterbury. Many are built in the Tudor, Colonial, Arts and Crafts and Stickley styles.

All Forest Hills Gardens properties have deeds with covenants and restrictions, which establish control over the exterior appearance, thereby maintaining a consistent look. In addition, the streets are privately owned and maintained by the Forest Hills Gardens Association. Street parking in this area is strictly for residents and visitors. Homes vary in size and range from attached townhouses to stone and brick mansions.

Forest Hills Gardens is perhaps best known as the home of the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium, the original site of the U.S. Tennis Open until the mid-1970s. Currently, it serves as a top-flight summer concert venue. It is still owned by the private West Side Tennis Club, which boasts a number of courts on various surfaces (grass, clay), a swimming pool, restaurant and full year-round social calendar for members.
